Exterior Decorating: Outdoor Clocks

A nice touch to any garden or outdoor entertaining area is an outdoor clock. Outdoor clocks also make fantastic gifts for homeowners with porches, outdoor living areas, pools, patios, etc.

Outdoor clocks give gardeners the means to keep track of the time as they work outdoors if necessary without having to worry about finding an ancient watch that is garden-work friendly. Not only that, but outdoor clocks add a decorative touch to areas outside that can otherwise be hard to decorate.

You can opt for a traditional analog clock design, or you can also add a nice sundial to an open outdoor area. A sun dial is the oldest outdoor clock, and makes a unique addition to any garden or patio.

Weatherproofing

While most outdoor clocks state they are weatherproof, you can ensure that your clock lasts for many seasons by choosing a location for it that is as sheltered as possible. If you’re hanging it on the outside of your house, or gazebo, for example, hang it high so it is sheltered by the eave of your roof.

If it rains, your outdoor clock will not be exposed to unnecessary moisture. If it snows you won’t have to worry about snow collecting on top of your clock and potentially knocking it down. You might also want to take your clock down seasonally for cleaning and a check up.

The most weather-friendly outdoor clocks are probably those made out of stone. These are the least sensitive to moisture. Clocks with glass or plastic faces will collect moisture inside, and can be hard to read, but will also run the risk of having a shorter life.

If you can afford to invest in a stone outdoor clock, you will be guaranteed endurance through most inclement weather. A stone sun dial will last through any kind of weather, so if you live in an area that experiences some extreme weather, this would be a fantastic option.

If you’re a weather fanatic, look for an outdoor clock with added features like a thermometer or a barometer. These tools can be helpful in gauging outdoor activities. Add a rain gauge and you will have your own personal weather station.
Some of the higher end outdoor clocks have a wireless show feature that would allow you to view the temperature, barometric pressure, etc. from a second digital show unit inside your home. These kinds of clocks are certainly efficient, and are sure to provide you with a lot of excellent use.
